Burnt Orange Filigree Pendant Knit Headband

So the time is coming (not here yet technically, at least in Chicago considering it is supposed to be 65 on Thanksgiving) soon where, if you haven’t already, we are going to have to dig out our hats/headbands and gloves and add them to our winter daily wardrobes. I really have always been  more of a fan of winter knit headbands than hats- they don’t mess up my hair if they have a button in the back so I can take them off and put them on without rubbing them against my hair, and they totally create less static. But, I have always had a hard time finding a knit headband that can double as an accessory, instead of looking like a unisex ugly fleece ski headband. So, after spending the last few winters trying to find a knit headband that could double as a cute accessory to my winter outerwear, I decided to start knitting my own. Yep, I knit. I’ve been thinking about buying a rocking chair and a cat to bat the yarn ball around but I’m allergic to cats and I hate rocking chairs so… that’s out. Anyways, a few years ago I finally started knitting my own headbands, and then began to make some for friends and relatives upon request.  They shared my problems of not being able to find a cute headband, and also not wanting to see a 10 year old boy wearing the exact same one once they settled on the generic unisex fleece headband that we all know we have owned at some point. Now that the weather is getting cold enough to wear these knit headbands, I thought that I’d add them to the lakeshore lavaliere winter line. Here is a burnt orange knit headband with a filigree & stone pendant that I made the other day:

The filigree layers come together to make a flower pendant, and I added an orange/copper patina to the second filigree layer to make it flow with the burnt orange color of the yarn. There is a wooden button closure in the back to put the headband on and take it off without creating a major hair static disaster. The yarn is thick and extremely warm- I have worn my other ones skiing and running in the dead of winter and my ears stayed nice and toasty.

Later today I’m going to add photos of the other colors of yarn available for this headband– I’ve been growing my yarn collection for about 5 years, so there are probably 50 other colors this headband can come in.

Halloween Baby & Toddler Headbands

I absolutely love Halloween– I love all of the decorations, dressing up, the colors, pumpkins…I could go on forever. So, now that it’s finally around the corner, I decided to start making Halloween themed baby & toddler headbands. (They aren’t exclusive to babies and toddlers- really they can be for anyone of any age!) This one below was fun to make because I tried something new with the pendant in the middle. It’s a silver bottle cap, with a picture that I found online and printed on photo paper, and then filled up with a special hardening transparent resin to protect the picture and turn the bottle cap into a sort of bezel. I’ve seen a bunch of ready made pendants like this that I could purchase, but I fell in love with the, as my cousin put it, “tiny baby ghost” picture that I found online, so I decided to do it myself. Now, since I have the resin and the bottle caps (don’t worry I bought ones that were never attached to beer bottles- I thought it was too weird to put a beer bottle cap on a child’s headband…) I can put any picture I want into the bottle cap and make it into a pendant. However, I still just love the baby ghost, so I may have to make a few more of these with different style headbands:

Yellow Flowered Baby Headband

This yellow & ivory flowered baby headband was custom ordered for a very cute little girl. I was excited to get this order because I’d like to continue branching out into headbands for babies and toddlersespecially themed ones for upcoming holidays. I spoke to some of my friends and relatives who have babies and toddlers to find out the best way to design the headband so that it would be easy to put on and take off, stay on once it was on, and be comfortable for the baby wearing it. The elastic in this headband is specifically made for babies– it is super soft and the band is a little thicker which makes it easier to stay in place. I also added a velcro closure in the back to make it easier to put on and take off, and so that it can be adjusted to make it smaller or bigger if the elastic is too big or doesn’t stretch  far enough. I just loved making this headband, and I cannot wait to get the chance to make even more! Here are some pictures of the finished product:

For dresses with simple necklines, a statement necklace like this one above with the pendant are a great accessory. They can add sophistication to a simple styled dress & draw the eye upward, highlighting your collarbone and adding punch to your dress all at once.

Headbands are a great way to keep your hair out of your face, or tame your wild bangs on hot & humid summer days- no matter what age you are! Unless you have an enchanted straightener that can magically defy the humidity and make your hair fall silky straight and smooth- in which case, please contact me privately by email and I think we can do some business- don an elastic headband like the one above. Leave your bangs & the hair that frames your face alone and sleep in an extra 20 minutes.

New Hair Clips: Sorry Grandma, Black & Brown DO Go Together

We’ve all had that problem… You know, the dilemma where you have a really great black shirt you want to wear and super cute brown boots, OR, great black boots, butttt you’ve been dying to wear that new brown purse – basically the problem of having to choose to wear black or brown because somewhere along the line we were told that black and brown clash. Well, there’s good news, people everywhere are starting to throw away the book of rigid style rules their grandmas gave them- and are wearing colors and patterns together that “just don’t go”. If you’re too nervous to toss the entire rule book out the window, take baby steps! We’ll look the other way if you want to hang on to your panty hose like an adult security blanket, but go ahead and wear that black shirt with the awesome brown boots &  tie it all together with an accessory that incorporates both, like this new flowered hair clip:

$17

Available in a variety of different flower colors upon request AND with an elastic headband instead of clip
