Green, Black, & Silver Bohemian Jewelry Set

This green, black, and silver floral bohemian beaded necklace, along with the earrings (and a bracelet that is still a work in progress), were part of a custom order for a matching set. Similar in design to the  whimsical bohemian necklace I posted last week, this necklace measures 16-17 inches- falling just over the collarbone. This necklace is elegant, whimsical, and fun, and definitely is versatile enough to be worn with any style of dress- although it was made to be worn for a more formal cocktail event.

Quick Style Tips (and several tangents) On Accessorizing Different Levels of Attire:

Obviously the style of necklace you wear depends on what event you are dressing for.  Shorter necklaces, sometimes called chokers (depending on the length), are usually the best accessories for the traditional formal dress styles.  (Side note: it is really difficult for me to refer to these necklaces as chokers, because to me, chokers invoke images of those black stretchy necklaces made from a pair of old tights, or the plastic, barbed wire looking ones most memorably worn by the Spice Girls. However, fashion is constantly evolving and so is the terminology, so I will try to move past it.)

As I said before, for formal event, a necklace with a shorter length (like this one) with either a drop pendant, stone, or charm is usually the most appropriate & the safest bet style-wise- as long as the neckline of your dress is, as with most formal dresses, an (appropriately) dropped neckline. If the neckline is too low, that would make the dress a style called Jersey Shore Reality TV Formal, which, translated, is a style, as recognized by the rest of the world, simply called ‘trashy’.  (This style is not to be confused with those worn by the unfortunate residents of the Jersey Shore who have no MTV ties.)  A finish with some sort of metal, and not leather or suede, which (for the most part) are materials that tend to imply a more casual look, is also best for dressier occasions.

Ok, back to this jewelry set. Annnnyways, I loved making this set because I was able to take my time (this awesome buyer gave me almost a month of advanced notice and time to work) and include so much intricate detail, highlighting each bead by using the headpins as links between the beads. I love the way the different shades of green in the jade beads, the translucent murano glass beads, and the freckled green ceramic beads create such a great range of color without clashing, and how they create such a nice contrast to the black onyx tube beads and the silver metal embellishments. In the earrings, as well as the bracelet (which is not pictured because it is still in progress) I used some of the different components of the necklace, but didn’t use all of them in both, nor did I repeat the exact combinations I used because, a. that would be boring, and b. I think that a matching set should have variations among the pieces. Without variation, the pieces work together can be too much, too matchy-matchy, or slightly overpowering and tacky. This is just my opinion, butttt it’s basically a fact. ; ) Later, I will add pictures of the finished bracelet to show how the pieces go together to create a set, but for now, here are the necklace and earrings:

Purple Turquoise Cube Bead Wrap Bracelet

This is going to be a reallllly quick post as I am out of town, but I felt like I was neglecting my site, and I don’t like to do that! This purple turquoise cube bead wrap bracelet was a custom order for a tube bead bracelet similar to the turquoise triple wrap tube bead bracelet- but with purple beads. (I also was given some creative license to experiment, thank God, because the hunt for the materials for this bracelet, and then making it, definitely required some creativity.) Purple tube beads are literally IMPOSSIBLE to find, and after searching every place and website I could think of, I came across these purple turquoise cube beads, and fell in love. The seller had only one 15 inch strand in stock, so there weren’t enough beads to complete the third wrap around. Since the request was for a silver button closure, I thought I would use the silver cube beads that I thankfully had to finish the third wrap around and frame the silver button closure. This bracelet was the result (and I think that despite the adjustments I had to make, it came out pretty well if I do say so myself!):

I am happy to accommodate any and all custom requests, and don’t mind hunting down different materials if I don’t already have them.

Thanks for reading and have a great Saturday!

Hand-Stamped Personalized Ring

Monogrammed jewelry is a great way to give a personal gift for any occasion- or for no occasion at all like this lakeshore lavaliere gold tone hand-stamped brass ring:

This hand stamped gold tone brass ring was a gift for my roommate, who is also the lovely hand model you see in the pictures below. After stamping the blank with her initials, I used the oxidation process that I mentioned in my last post to really make sure the letters were a nice and dark contrast to the rest of the blank. Then, I punched two holes to slip the wire through in order to anchor the blank to the wire ring base & added a metal & jewelry adhesive as well to create a firmer hold. I made the ring’s base from gold tone non-tarnish copper 18-gauge wire, which is definitely the wire I prefer to work with because it doesn’t nick every time you touch it with a tool like most other jewelry/craft wires.

I’ve always loved all things monogrammed, and this ring was a fun way to be able to give a gift to the girl who is bravely entering her third year of sharing a residence with me. Next up: a ring for my other roommate.

These rings are available in any size, in silver, and can be personalized with anyone’s initials (or a word or name as long as it is short enough to fit on the blank!)

Halloween Baby & Toddler Headbands

I absolutely love Halloween– I love all of the decorations, dressing up, the colors, pumpkins…I could go on forever. So, now that it’s finally around the corner, I decided to start making Halloween themed baby & toddler headbands. (They aren’t exclusive to babies and toddlers- really they can be for anyone of any age!) This one below was fun to make because I tried something new with the pendant in the middle. It’s a silver bottle cap, with a picture that I found online and printed on photo paper, and then filled up with a special hardening transparent resin to protect the picture and turn the bottle cap into a sort of bezel. I’ve seen a bunch of ready made pendants like this that I could purchase, but I fell in love with the, as my cousin put it, “tiny baby ghost” picture that I found online, so I decided to do it myself. Now, since I have the resin and the bottle caps (don’t worry I bought ones that were never attached to beer bottles- I thought it was too weird to put a beer bottle cap on a child’s headband…) I can put any picture I want into the bottle cap and make it into a pendant. However, I still just love the baby ghost, so I may have to make a few more of these with different style headbands:

Silver& Green Cameo Necklace

This silver and green cameo was a custom order, and  I think the way the tarnished silver and the green look together is a great color combination that I will definitely attempt to use more often in future pieces. I added some beading and I also made wire designs to look like flowers to give this piece a fun twist.  I realized when making this necklace just how much I love cameos, and how have not done enough pieces with them recently. Point of the story: there will more where this came from!

Hope you like it!

Silver Cameo Cuff Bracelet

Cameos are the perfect accessory if you like the vintage look– they’ve been around so long, even the ancient Greeks made them. A piece of jewelry that features a cameo can be a really great accent to a more formal outfit (but they’re great for everyday wear too!), and can add a classy touch that completes your look. This lakeshore lavaliere silver cameo cuff bracelet with black flowers and a gray liner was a custom order (I loved the customer’s request so much, I’m making myself a similar one!):

This bracelet would look great paired with a black dress and silver earrings!

Just click the pictures to access the listing in the lakeshore lavaliere online store! Other cameos colors and flower colors are available. The liner is also optional, (the customer just imagined hers with gray undertones, so that’s what I did!) Just specify your requests at checkout!

Have a great rest of your Sunday!

Check back tomorrow for a DIY coaster tutorial, and pictures of custom ordered bridesmaid jewelry!
