Hand Stamped Pieces- Music Lyrics, Birthstones, and of Course, Something for Mom

Although the countdown to finals (and having to come up with a 30 page paper on the meaning of justice…ahhhh) is less than a week away, I have gotten a chance in my free time (the time I have cut out of my sleeping schedule) to experiment with some more hand stamped pieces as well as some more bohemian pieces (WHICH I WILL POST TOMORROW…or the next day), which I haven’t been doing as much, and plan to do more of as soon as I have time to breathe again. So, since I haven’t posted in awhile, I thought I would post a few of my newer pieces below, and get back to studying/having writer’s block.

‘Let it Be’ Beatles Necklace

This first necklace is one that I’ve been meaning to make for a long time-Let it Be is one of my favorite songs! I have really wanted to start branching out into song lyrics and more actual words and quotes in the hand stamped category, so, if anyone has any suggestions for words or lyrics to hand stamp into a necklace, ring, bracelet, or even keychain, I’m listening! -and I’ll give you a discount for the idea ; ) .

Monogrammed Necklaces w/ Swarovski Birthstones

The next two necklaces are monogrammed brass and sterling silver, respectively. The brass necklace hangs on a satin finish 16-inch brass chain with a gold-filled trigger clasp, and the sterling silver necklace hangs on a 16 inch sterling silver chain with a sterling silver clasp. I know I have done the monogrammed necklaces and other pieces before, but I just finally got in Swarovski Crystal of each month’s birthstone, and I’m excited to say that although these were only listed for a day, I already was commissioned to do 2 sets of them (one in brass and one in sterling silver) as gifts from two brides-to-be to their bridesmaids, with each of their birthstones along with the monogram. (Of course I get the big orders during finals! Buttt… I am NOT complaining!). Also, in case you were wondering, these are both February birthdays with a Swarovski amethyst crystal.

Mother’s Day Hand Stamped Necklace

Finally, I realized that I am not only a terrible daughter because I won’t be able to make it to Mother’s Day brunch on Sunday, a family tradition, but also because I hadn’t gotten my mom anything yet. So, I decided to make her a necklace. The necklace below is a solid brass wavy heart pendant hanging on a 16 inch satin finish brass chain. On the heart, I stamped a symbol of a mother and child- the mother is bending over and hugging the child, and a heart is created in the space between them.  I saw the metal stamp and HAD to have it- I loved it, and I knew my mom would too. Bam. the perfect sentimental gift for Mom. Now I have to get back to studying ; (

Warm Weather Jewelry

Despite being a solid 18 degrees outside in lovely Chicago, 2 days ago was the first official day of spring. So, in order to keep my sanity in a city that more closely resembles a tundra than any beautiful image of greenery and flowers and growth that the word ‘spring’ conjures up in the mind, I have chosen to engage in something called ‘reality control’ (George Orwell’s 1984, anyone?) and try to force myself to see the beautiful reds of the flowers, green of the trees, blues of the lovely ever frigid lake Michigan (which I maintain looks just gray when it’s cold outside, but, okay, reality control). In order to maintain that mindset during this period where the trees look like something out of a bombed out post-Apocalyptic world and the only green I see while running down the lake shore path is provided by Whole Foods bags caught on the spidery branch fingers of the very barren trees, I have decided to surround myself with the warm weather colors by infusing my outfits-and especially my accessories, with them like these coral, turquoise, and green jade necklaces below. If the red, turquoise, and green weren’t bright enough to help me think warm weather thoughts, I complete each of them using sunny bright yellow gold brass chains and findings with a satin gold finish.

Ombre 50 Shades of Green 3x Wrap Bracelet

Soooo I couldn’t resist making an Ombre Wrap Bracelet with all of the different shades of green gemstone beads that I have in stock. I thought the different greens of the jade, aventurine, and unakite, gemstone beads would look great and give this bracelet a unique look as they faded into each other. Each set of 9 gemstone beads flows into the next set getting increasingly lighter like the ombre look. This lakeshore lavaliere ombre wrap bracelet is a great unique & bohemian accessory to add to any look.

Turquoise & Brass Graduated Pendant Necklace

Oversized pieces of jewelry are great when you need to accessorize a boring outfit, feel like making a bold statement (and for a multitude of other reasons) but, sometimes a smaller more delicate looking piece is better suited for your outfit or look. I wanted to make a necklace that was smaller in size, but still had a bohemian vibe and of course, made a statement. Since there are not too many lakeshore lavaliere necklaces that are delicate yet bohemian, I decided to make this turquoise and brass graduated pendant necklace.  This turquoise & brass graduated pendant necklace is the perfect accessory when you want to make a statement but don’t want to wear a large piece of jewelry to do it. Elegant and simple, the necklace still has a bohemian feel and catches the eye with the beautiful turquoise color of the 13 pendants and the way they contrast with the simple satin brass chain:

Bib Necklaces

Today’s post is allll about bib necklaces– after making the turquoise and coral bohemian bib necklace to spice up my blah outfit choices during this bleak Chicago winter (ignore that yesterday was 65 degrees outside…I have faith that later today or tomorrow it will be frigid and bleak and drop back down to the single digits) I really fell in love with creating different pieces in this style. Each bib necklace can be completely different despite the fact that they all essentially are a combination of several layers of bead strands of increasing lengths. They can be loud or even muted depending on the color, they can be bohemian but also classic (i.e. silver accents with pearls)- there are so many different options to create a necklace like the two lakeshore lavaliere bib necklaces below by starting with the same design.

Turquoise, Onyx & Pewter 5 strand Elephant Bib Necklace

Different gemstones, metals, pendants and bead combinations make each one completely unique and change the way any necklace highlights or accents an outfit, but with a type of necklace that is as large as a bib necklace, the colors and components really do shape the style of your outfit or the statement that it makes. Funky and loud or muted and classic, I think bib necklaces might be my new favorite style for 2013.

Bohemian Turquoise & Coral 4 Layer Bib Necklace

Recently I realized that I’ve been wearing a lot of black-I tend to gravitate toward a nearly all black wardrobe in the Chicago winter months, and I know I’m not alone. I have been thinking about what type of necklaces are the best accessories to spice up an all black outfit, and I landed on the style of necklace called a bib necklace. Oversized with eye catching details, they can spice up a boring outfit and add that pop of color that it needs. I decided to make this one using raw brass and 4 graduated layers of turquoise chip nuggets and free-form coral with brass accents:

I just love how the turquoise and coral look together; this necklace has exactly the amount of color to accessorize a colorless outfit and make sure it looks anything but boring!

Turquoise & Silver: Black Leather Wrap Bracelet & Sterling Silver Monogrammed Necklace

This week I am on vacation in sunny Florida- which, I have to say, is such an amazing change from the dreary subzero Chicago weather that I left behind. I wanted to spice up my warm weather wardrobe with some brightly colored accessories, so I set out to make myself a bracelet and a necklace. If you’ve read my blog before you probably know that I have an obsession with turquoise, so that was the gemstone & color I decided to go with. I realized that my turquoise pieces usually incorporate brown and gold, so I decided to go with a silver elephant button and black leather cord for the wrap bracelet, and a sterling silver chain and monogrammed disc for the necklace:

Custom Ordered Family Brass Family Name Necklace & Ring

I know it’s been awhile since I’ve posted- with finals and holiday orders picking up right at the same time, it’s been a little difficult to keep up with the blog! Anyways, I finally have a second to post about some of the recent custom orders I’ve gotten.

The first picture is of a monogrammed brass ring, and although the monogrammed brass ring has been available for some time now, this one features a different font, and different sizes of that font to create the traditional monogram style. The  first letter of the last name is in the center, and it is a larger  size than the initials of the first and middle names that bookend it. I wasn’t sure if it was going to fit, because the brass blank is very small and this font is much larger than the Aras font that I have been using, but it ended up being a perfect fit, and I love the way it turned out!

MFC ring

This hand stamped brass family name necklace was purchased as a Christmas gift by the customer for her mother, and has the first initials of her parents on the top brass round, and the names of the children around the edges of the bottom brass round. This was my first experiment with using the uppercase and the lowercase letters together (because they are already super hard to line up when they are the same size, and I was worried that they weren’t going to be straight or even), and once I finished, I was really glad I did. It ended up looking like it would if they were typed out, and the different cases and font sizes definitely add some interesting variation to this all brass necklace. I’m going to make one for my mom!

Green, Black, & Silver Bohemian Jewelry Set

This green, black, and silver floral bohemian beaded necklace, along with the earrings (and a bracelet that is still a work in progress), were part of a custom order for a matching set. Similar in design to the  whimsical bohemian necklace I posted last week, this necklace measures 16-17 inches- falling just over the collarbone. This necklace is elegant, whimsical, and fun, and definitely is versatile enough to be worn with any style of dress- although it was made to be worn for a more formal cocktail event.

Quick Style Tips (and several tangents) On Accessorizing Different Levels of Attire:

Obviously the style of necklace you wear depends on what event you are dressing for.  Shorter necklaces, sometimes called chokers (depending on the length), are usually the best accessories for the traditional formal dress styles.  (Side note: it is really difficult for me to refer to these necklaces as chokers, because to me, chokers invoke images of those black stretchy necklaces made from a pair of old tights, or the plastic, barbed wire looking ones most memorably worn by the Spice Girls. However, fashion is constantly evolving and so is the terminology, so I will try to move past it.)

As I said before, for formal event, a necklace with a shorter length (like this one) with either a drop pendant, stone, or charm is usually the most appropriate & the safest bet style-wise- as long as the neckline of your dress is, as with most formal dresses, an (appropriately) dropped neckline. If the neckline is too low, that would make the dress a style called Jersey Shore Reality TV Formal, which, translated, is a style, as recognized by the rest of the world, simply called ‘trashy’.  (This style is not to be confused with those worn by the unfortunate residents of the Jersey Shore who have no MTV ties.)  A finish with some sort of metal, and not leather or suede, which (for the most part) are materials that tend to imply a more casual look, is also best for dressier occasions.

Ok, back to this jewelry set. Annnnyways, I loved making this set because I was able to take my time (this awesome buyer gave me almost a month of advanced notice and time to work) and include so much intricate detail, highlighting each bead by using the headpins as links between the beads. I love the way the different shades of green in the jade beads, the translucent murano glass beads, and the freckled green ceramic beads create such a great range of color without clashing, and how they create such a nice contrast to the black onyx tube beads and the silver metal embellishments. In the earrings, as well as the bracelet (which is not pictured because it is still in progress) I used some of the different components of the necklace, but didn’t use all of them in both, nor did I repeat the exact combinations I used because, a. that would be boring, and b. I think that a matching set should have variations among the pieces. Without variation, the pieces work together can be too much, too matchy-matchy, or slightly overpowering and tacky. This is just my opinion, butttt it’s basically a fact. ; ) Later, I will add pictures of the finished bracelet to show how the pieces go together to create a set, but for now, here are the necklace and earrings:
