Bohemian Turquoise & Coral 4 Layer Bib Necklace

Recently I realized that I’ve been wearing a lot of black-I tend to gravitate toward a nearly all black wardrobe in the Chicago winter months, and I know I’m not alone. I have been thinking about what type of necklaces are the best accessories to spice up an all black outfit, and I landed on the style of necklace called a bib necklace. Oversized with eye catching details, they can spice up a boring outfit and add that pop of color that it needs. I decided to make this one using raw brass and 4 graduated layers of turquoise chip nuggets and free-form coral with brass accents:

I just love how the turquoise and coral look together; this necklace has exactly the amount of color to accessorize a colorless outfit and make sure it looks anything but boring!

Turquoise & Silver: Black Leather Wrap Bracelet & Sterling Silver Monogrammed Necklace

This week I am on vacation in sunny Florida- which, I have to say, is such an amazing change from the dreary subzero Chicago weather that I left behind. I wanted to spice up my warm weather wardrobe with some brightly colored accessories, so I set out to make myself a bracelet and a necklace. If you’ve read my blog before you probably know that I have an obsession with turquoise, so that was the gemstone & color I decided to go with. I realized that my turquoise pieces usually incorporate brown and gold, so I decided to go with a silver elephant button and black leather cord for the wrap bracelet, and a sterling silver chain and monogrammed disc for the necklace:

Brass Leaf Turquoise Earrings & Accessorizing w/ Jewelry

Bohemian accessories have always been a draw for me; lakeshore lavaliere was definitely borne out of a love for all things bohemian and colorful coupled with a desire to make jewelry and accessories to reflect that love. Obviously if you have read this blog or checked out my etsy shop you’ll see that I have definitely expanded my creative interest to encompass making pieces that are also classic, minimalistic, and/or personalized. I’m having a great time exploring these other interests and creating new and different pieces in new and different styles every day, but I thought that I would go back to my bohemian stylistic roots to create this pair of brass leaf turquoise drop earrings:

Brass Leaf Turquoise Drop Earrings Brass LEaf Turquoise Drop Earrings (Hanging)

To make these earrings, I first hammered out the brass leaves to flatten them & make them easier for my tools to grip. To hang the turquoise gemstone drops from the brass leaves, I punched 3 holes in the bottom of each leaf (with my new metal punching tool that I LOVE LOVE LOVE) through which I looped the brass pin findings. I punched 1 hole in the top of each leaf from which I then hung the respective earring wires. The vibrant gold tone of the brass coupled with the brightness of the turquoise gemstones makes these earrings a bold fashion statement- just keep in mind that less is more when deciding what other accessories to wear! See: tangent on overaccessorizing below.

Jewelry-Accessorizing Style Tips/Rant/Tangent
Earrings are one of my favorite accessories- especially chandelier or large dangle earrings. Large sized dangle earrings in the chandelier design are a bold style choice & and can be a great way to accent any outfit as long as you remember to keep other accessories to a minimum.
Example: don’t wear large chandelier earrings with a huge/chunky necklace. Even if the earrings and necklace are individually elegant/classy/beautiful, the jewelry will overwhelm you and even appear tacky.  A necklace and dangle earrings are definitely okay to wear together- just remember that a little goes a long way. You want the jewelry to accent your features, not overwhelm you like this painful-to-look-at picture of the witch from Hocus Pocus (okay, I know her name is Sarah Jessica Parker but I’m mad at her for this horrendous jewelry nightmare and because I’m in love with Matthew Broderick…so she will heretofore be know only as the witch from Hocus Pocus):

Monogrammed Sterling Silver Cuff Links

These cuff links were created as a gift, but, after I finished and photographed them, they got such a great response from everyone who saw them, so I decided to make them available for purchase in my  lakeshore lavaliere online shop (etsy.com/shop/lakeshorelavaliere) and showcase them here! I made the cuff links from sterling silver discs that I hand stamped with the monogram using a combination of Seymour (a monogram font, and the largest letter in the monogram) and Typewriter/Newsprint fonts (the two smaller outer letters). After I stamped the blanks, I oxidized the letter impressions to darken their appearance and make them stand out from the rest of the disc. Then, I put the discs in my NEW machine jewelry polishing tumbler (I am really excited about it). It makes them so much shinier and smoother than anyone ever could by hand. After they were polished, the monogrammed discs were ready to be attached to the sterling silver cuff link base, which I did by soldering them on. I did this because I don’t like using a glue adhesive on sterling silver, I like using a butane blow torch, and because since cuff links are basically fasteners, they take a bit of a beating and I wanted them to be pretty much welded on so they would last FOREVER. Here are a few pictures of the finished product:

Monogrammed Steel Tie Clips

Personalized accessories are a great gift to give or receive, so I am really excited to finally be able to offer lakeshore lavaliere monogrammed tie clips! These custom ordered tie clips have a spring so that they can clamp onto the ties without sliding around. They also show the different monogram options; there are two styles that are available- the first tie clip shows the  traditional order for monograms, (first initial, larger last initial, middle initial), and the second two show the popular first, middle, last order with all the letters in the same size. In the last tie clip pictured, the customer wanted a Republican elephant symbol. So, after finding the Republican elephant charm online, I soldered it onto the tie clip to finish it off!

Custom Ordered Family Brass Family Name Necklace & Ring

I know it’s been awhile since I’ve posted- with finals and holiday orders picking up right at the same time, it’s been a little difficult to keep up with the blog! Anyways, I finally have a second to post about some of the recent custom orders I’ve gotten.

The first picture is of a monogrammed brass ring, and although the monogrammed brass ring has been available for some time now, this one features a different font, and different sizes of that font to create the traditional monogram style. The  first letter of the last name is in the center, and it is a larger  size than the initials of the first and middle names that bookend it. I wasn’t sure if it was going to fit, because the brass blank is very small and this font is much larger than the Aras font that I have been using, but it ended up being a perfect fit, and I love the way it turned out!

This hand stamped brass family name necklace was purchased as a Christmas gift by the customer for her mother, and has the first initials of her parents on the top brass round, and the names of the children around the edges of the bottom brass round. This was my first experiment with using the uppercase and the lowercase letters together (because they are already super hard to line up when they are the same size, and I was worried that they weren’t going to be straight or even), and once I finished, I was really glad I did. It ended up looking like it would if they were typed out, and the different cases and font sizes definitely add some interesting variation to this all brass necklace. I’m going to make one for my mom!

Green, Black, & Silver Bohemian Jewelry Set

This green, black, and silver floral bohemian beaded necklace, along with the earrings (and a bracelet that is still a work in progress), were part of a custom order for a matching set. Similar in design to the  whimsical bohemian necklace I posted last week, this necklace measures 16-17 inches- falling just over the collarbone. This necklace is elegant, whimsical, and fun, and definitely is versatile enough to be worn with any style of dress- although it was made to be worn for a more formal cocktail event.

Quick Style Tips (and several tangents) On Accessorizing Different Levels of Attire:

Obviously the style of necklace you wear depends on what event you are dressing for.  Shorter necklaces, sometimes called chokers (depending on the length), are usually the best accessories for the traditional formal dress styles.  (Side note: it is really difficult for me to refer to these necklaces as chokers, because to me, chokers invoke images of those black stretchy necklaces made from a pair of old tights, or the plastic, barbed wire looking ones most memorably worn by the Spice Girls. However, fashion is constantly evolving and so is the terminology, so I will try to move past it.)

As I said before, for formal event, a necklace with a shorter length (like this one) with either a drop pendant, stone, or charm is usually the most appropriate & the safest bet style-wise- as long as the neckline of your dress is, as with most formal dresses, an (appropriately) dropped neckline. If the neckline is too low, that would make the dress a style called Jersey Shore Reality TV Formal, which, translated, is a style, as recognized by the rest of the world, simply called ‘trashy’.  (This style is not to be confused with those worn by the unfortunate residents of the Jersey Shore who have no MTV ties.)  A finish with some sort of metal, and not leather or suede, which (for the most part) are materials that tend to imply a more casual look, is also best for dressier occasions.

Ok, back to this jewelry set. Annnnyways, I loved making this set because I was able to take my time (this awesome buyer gave me almost a month of advanced notice and time to work) and include so much intricate detail, highlighting each bead by using the headpins as links between the beads. I love the way the different shades of green in the jade beads, the translucent murano glass beads, and the freckled green ceramic beads create such a great range of color without clashing, and how they create such a nice contrast to the black onyx tube beads and the silver metal embellishments. In the earrings, as well as the bracelet (which is not pictured because it is still in progress) I used some of the different components of the necklace, but didn’t use all of them in both, nor did I repeat the exact combinations I used because, a. that would be boring, and b. I think that a matching set should have variations among the pieces. Without variation, the pieces work together can be too much, too matchy-matchy, or slightly overpowering and tacky. This is just my opinion, butttt it’s basically a fact. ; ) Later, I will add pictures of the finished bracelet to show how the pieces go together to create a set, but for now, here are the necklace and earrings:

Hand Stamped Brass Family Name Necklace

I have been thinking about what I wanted to give my mom this Christmas, and I knew I wanted it to be something personal. Since her favorite thing in the world is our family, I thought I would make a necklace for her that incorporated the names of our family. (Even though I am posting it here, I know it will still be a surprise because she would never have any idea how to get to this blog ). This brass necklace is stamped with all of our names, and is like a little family tree; my parents’ initials are stamped in the middle on the brass blank, and my name and my sister’s name are stamped around the outside of the washer:

These make great holiday gifts for a mother or a grandmother!

Burnt Orange Filigree Pendant Knit Headband

So the time is coming (not here yet technically, at least in Chicago considering it is supposed to be 65 on Thanksgiving) soon where, if you haven’t already, we are going to have to dig out our hats/headbands and gloves and add them to our winter daily wardrobes. I really have always been  more of a fan of winter knit headbands than hats- they don’t mess up my hair if they have a button in the back so I can take them off and put them on without rubbing them against my hair, and they totally create less static. But, I have always had a hard time finding a knit headband that can double as an accessory, instead of looking like a unisex ugly fleece ski headband. So, after spending the last few winters trying to find a knit headband that could double as a cute accessory to my winter outerwear, I decided to start knitting my own. Yep, I knit. I’ve been thinking about buying a rocking chair and a cat to bat the yarn ball around but I’m allergic to cats and I hate rocking chairs so… that’s out. Anyways, a few years ago I finally started knitting my own headbands, and then began to make some for friends and relatives upon request.  They shared my problems of not being able to find a cute headband, and also not wanting to see a 10 year old boy wearing the exact same one once they settled on the generic unisex fleece headband that we all know we have owned at some point. Now that the weather is getting cold enough to wear these knit headbands, I thought that I’d add them to the lakeshore lavaliere winter line. Here is a burnt orange knit headband with a filigree & stone pendant that I made the other day:

The filigree layers come together to make a flower pendant, and I added an orange/copper patina to the second filigree layer to make it flow with the burnt orange color of the yarn. There is a wooden button closure in the back to put the headband on and take it off without creating a major hair static disaster. The yarn is thick and extremely warm- I have worn my other ones skiing and running in the dead of winter and my ears stayed nice and toasty.

Later today I’m going to add photos of the other colors of yarn available for this headband– I’ve been growing my yarn collection for about 5 years, so there are probably 50 other colors this headband can come in.

Tree of Life Green Cuff Bracelet

This two toned green tree of life cuff bracelet is a fun addition to my own jewelry collection. These earth tones go with almost everything in my fall wardrobe- and I’m sure with most other peoples’ fall clothing as well. The lighter, more lime green beads will add a pop of color to my darker fall wardrobe without causing this bracelet to clash.
